Super Hydro™

Produced with the Super Hydro™ method

Simplisia vs Super Hydro™: extraction separates active compounds from fibre and starch

Super Hydro™ is an extraction method developed by BBK's extract manufacturing team. It draws out the active compounds of natural materials more effectively at a lower concentration. Based on our internal testing, a Super Hydro™ extract at a 2:1 ratio delivers performance comparable to a 5:1 extract from non-standardised producers.

Patent status: The Super Hydro™ method is currently patent pending. Even so, every BBK extract has been produced with this method from the start, so each batch you receive meets a quality standard above the market average.

Research & product opportunities

Black Maca Extract (Lepidium meyenii): 3 Clinical Studies and Product Opportunities

Black maca is a dark-colored variety of maca, a tuber from the Peruvian highlands. Human research on men's vitality and fitness exists, but the studies are small and the results are not yet consistent. Only one of the three studies below specifically used black maca.

Study 1 · Clinical study Strong evidence

Effect of Black Maca Supplementation on Inflammatory Markers and Physical Fitness in Male Elite Athletes.

Lee, Park, Kim, et al. Nutrients, 2023.

Study design: Clinical study in 44 elite male athletes (shooting, racket sports, and fin swimming). Capsules containing 2,500 mg of 100 percent concentrated black maca extract, one capsule twice a day for 8 weeks.

Key findings
  • Changes were seen in the ATP-PC energy system and the aerobic energy system, especially in fin swimmers.
  • The authors linked this to increased antioxidant activity and factors regulating mitochondrial biogenesis.
  • The authors called these findings early evidence; the abstract does not mention a placebo comparison group.

What it means for your product: The only study here that specifically used black maca. Relevant for product positioning in sports communities, with the caveat that the evidence is still preliminary.

Study 2 · Randomized controlled trial (RCT) Strong evidence

Does Lepidium meyenii (Maca) improve seminal quality?

Alcalde, Rabasa Andrologia, 2020.

Study design: Double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized pilot clinical trial in 69 infertile men with mild asthenozoospermia and/or oligozoospermia. Maca 2 g per day (n = 35) or placebo (n = 34) for 12 weeks.

Key findings
  • Sperm concentration was higher in the maca group than with placebo: 15.04 vs 10.16 (p = 0.011).
  • There were no significant differences in semen volume, sperm motility, or normal sperm morphology.
  • The abstract does not state which maca variety was used.

What it means for your product: The most relevant clinical evidence for the men's reproductive health segment. Only one parameter improved, so use it as educational material, not as a fertility claim.

Study 3 · Randomized controlled trial (RCT) Strong evidence

A double-blind, randomized, pilot dose-finding study of maca root (L. meyenii) for the management of SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction.

Dording, Fisher, Papakostas, et al. CNS neuroscience & therapeutics, 2008.

Study design: Double-blind randomized dose-finding pilot study in 20 patients with remitted depression and SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction (17 women). Maca 1.5 g compared with 3.0 g per day.

Key findings
  • At 3.0 g per day, ASEX scores improved from 22.8 to 16.9 and MGH-SFQ scores from 24.1 to 17.0.
  • The 1.5 g per day dose showed no significant improvement.
  • Libido improved significantly in the overall analysis, but not when analyzed by dose group.
  • Only 10 participants completed the study; maca was well tolerated.

What it means for your product: Shows research interest in maca for libido, with a possible dose-dependent effect. The study was very small and most participants were women, so it is not a basis for claims.

Claims you can make

Language guide for B2B and educational materials. Claims on finished product labels and ads must be the ones approved by BPOM at registration.

OK to say

  • Contains black maca (Lepidium meyenii) extract, a tuber from the Andean highlands of Peru.
  • Maca has been studied in clinical trials related to sperm quality and sexual function (cite the source).
  • Black maca is one of the color varieties of maca.

Avoid

  • Increases fertility or overcomes male infertility.
  • A sexual stimulant, treats erectile dysfunction, or overcomes side effects of antidepressant medication.
  • Proven to increase stamina or athletic performance.

Two of the three studies used maca without naming the variety, so the results cannot be claimed specifically for black maca. No content marker is listed yet for BBK's black maca extract; request a CoA if you need quality parameters. Consumers who take regular medication should consult a doctor. BBK's black maca extract is not yet halal certified.

Using this research for BPOM registration

  1. Add the three journals above to the literature review or the safety and benefit supporting data in your product dossier.
  2. Attach BBK's specification and per-batch CoA as raw material quality data. The specification always ships with the order; CoA is available on request.
  3. Match your serving size to the doses used in the studies, then confirm final claims with a regulatory consultant or BPOM.

The studies above were not done with BBK products. BBK extracts are made with the Super Hydro™ method, but study results do not automatically apply to your finished product.
