Super Hydro™

Produced with the Super Hydro™ method

Simplisia vs Super Hydro™: extraction separates active compounds from fibre and starch

Super Hydro™ is an extraction method developed by BBK's extract manufacturing team. It draws out the active compounds of natural materials more effectively at a lower concentration. Based on our internal testing, a Super Hydro™ extract at a 2:1 ratio delivers performance comparable to a 5:1 extract from non-standardised producers.

Patent status: The Super Hydro™ method is currently patent pending. Even so, every BBK extract has been produced with this method from the start, so each batch you receive meets a quality standard above the market average.

Research & product opportunities

Fig Fruit Extract (Ficus carica): 3 Studies and Product Opportunities

Fig fruit is known as a source of fiber and minerals, and has been tested in several small clinical trials. The most relevant evidence is in the areas of digestion and nutrient intake. Below are three studies useful for drink powder, cereal, and bakery brands.

Study 1 · Randomized controlled trial (RCT) Strong evidence

Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of Ficus carica paste for the management of functional constipation.

Baek, Ha, Kim, et al. Asia Pacific journal of clinical nutrition, 2016.

Study design: Double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial in Korea in people with functional constipation (40 received Ficus carica paste, 40 received placebo) for 8 weeks.

Key findings
  • Fig paste was associated with a significant reduction in colonic transit time compared with placebo.
  • Stool form and abdominal discomfort improved compared with placebo.
  • Blood parameters and clinical findings of organ toxicity stayed within normal limits.
  • The authors concluded that fig paste may be beneficial for people with constipation.

What it means for your product: The strongest clinical evidence for figs in the digestive area. The form tested was a paste, not extract powder.

Study 2 · Randomized controlled trial (RCT) Strong evidence

Effect of dried California Mission figs on mineral status and food replacement.

Alshaeri, Natto, Tonstad, et al. Public health nutrition, 2015.

Study design: Randomized crossover clinical trial in 88 American adults with a mean age of about 56; 120 g of dried figs per day added to the usual diet for 5 weeks.

Key findings
  • Calcium and potassium intake from 24-hour food records was higher during the fig period.
  • Blood mineral levels were almost the same between the fig period and the usual diet.
  • Fig consumption replaced part of other intake, for example 23 percent of cereal products and 10 percent of dairy products.
  • The authors concluded that figs can increase intake of some minerals, but do not change blood mineral levels.

What it means for your product: Supports the story of figs as a nutritious food ingredient. Not enough for mineral claims on products without your own content testing.

Study 3 · Scientific review Supporting evidence

Industrial Application and Health Prospective of Fig (Ficus carica) By-Products.

Rasool, Aziz, Khalid, et al. Molecules (Basel, Switzerland), 2023.

Study design: Literature review on the industrial applications and health prospects of fig by-products (leaves, fruit, seeds, and latex).

Key findings
  • Fig plant parts are rich in antioxidants, phenolic compounds, polyunsaturated fatty acids, phytosterols, and vitamins.
  • Fig by-products are used in the bakery, dairy, and beverage industries.
  • Extract or powder forms are used to add nutritional value and stability to food products.
  • The authors linked its bioactive content to various chronic diseases, based on the studies summarized.

What it means for your product: A practical reference for R&D teams who want to use figs in bakery, dairy, or beverages.

Claims you can make

Language guide for B2B and educational materials. Claims on finished product labels and ads must be the ones approved by BPOM at registration.

OK to say

  • Contains fig fruit (Ficus carica) extract with dietary fiber as a marker.
  • Figs have been studied in clinical trials related to digestion and mineral intake (cite the source).
  • Figs are known as a fruit that contains fiber and minerals.

Avoid

  • Treats constipation or eases bowel movements.
  • Prevents cancer, diabetes, or heart disease.
  • A source of calcium or potassium, unless supported by content test results and in line with BPOM nutrition claim rules.

The clinical trials above used fig paste and dried figs in large amounts (120 g per day), not extract powder in small doses. Fig latex and leaves are known to trigger phytophotodermatitis, so make sure the material comes from the fruit. This SKU is not yet halal certified.

Using this research for BPOM registration

  1. Add the three journals above to the literature review or the safety and benefit supporting data in your product dossier.
  2. Attach BBK's specification and per-batch CoA as raw material quality data. The specification always ships with the order; CoA is available on request.
  3. Match your serving size to the doses used in the studies, then confirm final claims with a regulatory consultant or BPOM.

The studies above were not done with BBK products. BBK extracts are made with the Super Hydro™ method, but study results do not automatically apply to your finished product.
