Super Hydro™

Produced with the Super Hydro™ method

Simplisia vs Super Hydro™: extraction separates active compounds from fibre and starch

Super Hydro™ is an extraction method developed by BBK's extract manufacturing team. It draws out the active compounds of natural materials more effectively at a lower concentration. Based on our internal testing, a Super Hydro™ extract at a 2:1 ratio delivers performance comparable to a 5:1 extract from non-standardised producers.

Patent status: The Super Hydro™ method is currently patent pending. Even so, every BBK extract has been produced with this method from the start, so each batch you receive meets a quality standard above the market average.

Research & product opportunities

Bangle Extract (Zingiber purpureum): 3 Studies and Product Opportunities

Bangle is a jamu rhizome known in Thailand as plai. In the literature, the species is also written as Zingiber montanum or Zingiber cassumunar. Its clinical research is more extensive than expected, including a phase 3 trial of oral capsules and topical creams.

Study 1 · Randomized controlled trial (RCT) Strong evidence

Phase III study of Phlai capsules in the treatment of allergic rhinitis: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

Hoang, Seresirikachorn, Chitsuthipakorn, et al. Asian Pacific journal of allergy and immunology, 2026.

Study design: Phase 3 double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial in 262 patients with allergic rhinitis. Plai capsules at 100 mg or 200 mg once daily for 4 weeks.

Key findings
  • Plai 100 mg improved the total score of five nasal symptoms compared with placebo (difference -0.62).
  • Runny nose, nasal itching, and eye itching improved slightly at week 4.
  • Nasal congestion, sneezing, and quality of life scores did not improve significantly.
  • The 200 mg dose gave no added benefit, and side effects were comparable between groups.

What it means for your product: The strongest oral clinical evidence for bangle. The effect is small, so it suits education for seasonal comfort products, not allergy treatment claims.

Study 2 · Systematic review Very strong evidence

Clinical effects of Zingiber cassumunar (Plai): A systematic review.

Chongmelaxme, Sruamsiri, Dilokthornsakul, et al. Complementary therapies in medicine, 2017.

Study design: Systematic review of the clinical effects of plai from 808 articles; 6 studies were included (4 randomized clinical trials and 2 quasi-experiments) with 178 intervention patients and 177 controls, lasting 7 days to 2 months.

Key findings
  • 14% plai cream showed a strong tendency to reduce muscle pain and ankle sprains.
  • Evidence for acne and antihistamine effects is still unclear.
  • Traditionally, plai is used for bruises, sprains, and muscle pain.

What it means for your product: Supports the development of topical products such as balms, creams, and massage oils made with bangle.

Study 3 · Preclinical study (animal) Early evidence

Safety Evaluation of Zingiber cassumunar Roxb. Rhizome Extract: Acute and Chronic Toxicity Studies in Rats.

Koontongkaew, Poachanukoon, Sireeratawong, et al. International scholarly research notices, 2014.

Study design: Acute and chronic oral toxicity tests of Zingiber cassumunar rhizome extract granules in Sprague-Dawley rats, including a 270-day repeated-dose test.

Key findings
  • A single dose of 5,000 mg/kg body weight caused no signs of poisoning or death during 14 days of observation.
  • The 270-day test at doses up to 1,125 mg/kg body weight per day showed no toxicity.
  • Some changes in organ weights and blood parameters were statistically significant, but were not judged harmful.
  • The no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) was set at 1,125 mg/kg body weight per day.

What it means for your product: An important reference for the safety section of a BPOM dossier, especially for long-term oral products.

Traditional bangle jamu

Bangle is a classic jamu ingredient, including postpartum jamu and traditional slimming jamu, with claims following BPOM's jamu pathway.

Seasonal herbal capsules

Capsules for respiratory comfort during seasonal changes, with claims approved by BPOM.

Post-workout care products

Creams or gels for running and gym communities.

Claims you can make

Language guide for B2B and educational materials. Claims on finished product labels and ads must be the ones approved by BPOM at registration.

OK to say

  • Contains bangle (Zingiber purpureum) extract, a traditional Indonesian jamu rhizome.
  • Bangle (plai) has been studied in a phase 3 clinical trial in humans (cite the source).
  • A 270-day toxicity test in rats found no adverse effects at the doses tested.

Avoid

  • Treats allergic rhinitis, asthma, or COVID-19.
  • Cures muscle pain or sprains.
  • Slims the body.

The clinical trials used plai extract capsules and a 14% cream from Thailand; equivalence with BBK's extract should be checked via the CoA because no content marker is listed yet. The names Zingiber purpureum, Z. montanum, and Z. cassumunar refer to the same plant in the literature.

Using this research for BPOM registration

  1. Add the three journals above to the literature review or the safety and benefit supporting data in your product dossier.
  2. Attach BBK's specification and per-batch CoA as raw material quality data. The specification always ships with the order; CoA is available on request.
  3. Match your serving size to the doses used in the studies, then confirm final claims with a regulatory consultant or BPOM.

The studies above were not done with BBK products. BBK extracts are made with the Super Hydro™ method, but study results do not automatically apply to your finished product.
