Effects of beetroot juice on blood pressure in hypertension according to European Society of Hypertension Guidelines: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Grönroos, Eggertsen, Bernhardsson, et al. Nutrition, metabolism, and cardiovascular diseases : NMCD, 2024.
Study design: Systematic review and meta-analysis of 11 randomized clinical trials with 349 hypertensive patients (clinic blood pressure of 140/90 mmHg or higher).
- Clinic systolic blood pressure fell by 5.31 mmHg compared with placebo.
- There was no significant effect on clinic diastolic pressure or 24-hour blood pressure.
- The effect was linked to an intake of 200 to 800 mg of nitrate per day from beetroot juice, with no sign of tolerance.
- Certainty of evidence was rated low, so the results should be interpreted with care.
What it means for your product: Shows that the effect of beetroot depends on nitrate content. This is educational material, not a blood pressure-lowering claim.
