New Zealand Blackcurrant Extract Improves High-Intensity Intermittent Running.
Perkins, Vine, Blacker, et al. International journal of sport nutrition and exercise metabolism, 2015.
Study design: Double-blind randomized crossover trial in 13 active men. New Zealand blackcurrant extract capsules at 300 mg per day (containing 105 mg of anthocyanins) or placebo for 7 days, with a washout of at least 14 days, followed by a repeated sprint running test to exhaustion.
- Total running distance rose by 10.6% with the extract (4,282 m vs 3,871 m with placebo).
- Sprint distance rose by 10.8%.
- Heart rate, oxygen consumption, lactate, and perceived exertion did not differ in the first 4 stages.
- Lactate at exhaustion tended to be higher with the extract (6.01 vs 5.22 mmol/L), but this was not significant (p = 0.07).
What it means for your product: Provides an example of a tested anthocyanin dose for sports product concepts. The sample was small and only active men, so it is limited to educational material.
