Super Hydro™

Produced with the Super Hydro™ method

Simplisia vs Super Hydro™: extraction separates active compounds from fibre and starch

Super Hydro™ is an extraction method developed by BBK's extract manufacturing team. It draws out the active compounds of natural materials more effectively at a lower concentration. Based on our internal testing, a Super Hydro™ extract at a 2:1 ratio delivers performance comparable to a 5:1 extract from non-standardised producers.

Patent status: The Super Hydro™ method is currently patent pending. Even so, every BBK extract has been produced with this method from the start, so each batch you receive meets a quality standard above the market average.

Lemon Fruit Extract (Citrus limon): 3 Studies and Product Opportunities

Lemon is a very common food ingredient, but benefit trials of lemon fruit or juice in humans are still rare. The three studies below focus on the fruit: its constituents and activity, the lemon-typical flavanone (eriocitrin), and one human trial on the acidity of lemon juice on teeth. The main value of lemon extract remains its taste, aroma, and technological function.

Study 1 · Scientific review Supporting evidence

Features, Pharmacological Chemistry, Molecular Mechanism and Health Benefits of Lemon.

Singh, Yarla, Siddiqi, et al. Medicinal chemistry (Shariqah (United Arab Emirates)), 2021.

Study design: Literature review from various scientific databases on the characteristics, pharmacological chemistry, molecular mechanisms, and health benefits of Citrus limon.

Key findings
  • Extracts and phytochemicals from various parts of the lemon plant have been reported to have antioxidant, antiulcer, antimicrobial, liver-protective, and antihyperglycemic activity.
  • These activities are linked to the phytochemical, vitamin, and nutrient content of citrus fruits.
  • Citrus fruits have great economic value, both as fresh fruit and as processed industrial products.
  • This review summarizes the existing literature, not new clinical trials.

What it means for your product: A basic reference for the literature review. It does not provide direct clinical evidence for lemon fruit extract.

Study 2 · Scientific review Supporting evidence

Eriocitrin: A review of pharmacological effects.

Yao, Liu, Bashir, et al. Biomedicine & pharmacotherapy = Biomedecine & pharmacotherapie, 2022.

Study design: Literature review on the pharmacological effects of eriocitrin (eriodictyol 7-O-β-D-rutinoside), a flavanone abundant in Citrus limon.

Key findings
  • Citrus limon is described as a good source of eriocitrin.
  • Reported activities include antioxidant, antitumor, antiallergic, antidiabetic, and anti-inflammatory effects.
  • Eriocitrin is metabolized by the gut microbiota into eriodictyol, methyl-eriodictyol, DHCA, and other conjugated molecules.
  • The authors suggested more in-depth studies before clinical trials.

What it means for your product: Provides a lemon-specific polyphenol story beyond vitamin C and citric acid. Eriocitrin content in the extract needs to be measured if you want to mention it on the label.

Study 3 · Randomized controlled trial (RCT) Strong evidence

Cross-polarization optical coherence tomographic assessment of in situ simulated erosive tooth wear.

Romero, Bezerra, Fried, et al. Journal of biophotonics, 2021.

Study design: 3-arm crossover clinical study in 20 participants who wore tooth enamel specimens in the mouth for 14 days per arm, randomized to lemon juice (pH 2.5; citric acid 4.25% w/v), grapefruit juice (pH 3.5; citric acid 1.03% w/v), or water.

Key findings
  • Lemon juice was used as a model of severe tooth erosion, and grapefruit juice as a model of moderate erosion.
  • Enamel surface loss was greater on day 14 than on day 7 for both moderate and severe erosion.
  • Profilometry distinguished severity levels: water was lower than grapefruit, and grapefruit was lower than lemon.
  • The main aim of the study was to test a tooth erosion monitoring device (CP-OCT).

What it means for your product: Important safety data: the high acidity of lemon juice, which comes from citric acid, can erode tooth enamel. Relevant for formulating lemon drinks and serving recommendations.

Claims you can make

Language guide for B2B and educational materials. Claims on finished product labels and ads must be the ones approved by BPOM at registration.

OK to say

  • Contains lemon fruit (Citrus limon) extract with citric acid as a marker.
  • Lemon contains the flavanone eriocitrin, one of the typical polyphenols of citrus fruits (cite the source).
  • Lemon gives a fresh sour taste and a distinctive citrus aroma.

Avoid

  • Detoxes, slims, burns fat, or lowers blood sugar.
  • Prevents cancer, prevents kidney stones, or treats any disease.
  • Safe for teeth. Lemon juice is actually used as a model for tooth enamel erosion.

There are no benefit trials of lemon fruit or extract in humans in this research set; two references are literature reviews that present no new clinical trials, and the only human trial covers the risk of tooth erosion. Very acidic lemon-based drinks should be formulated and served with attention to acidity. Much research with similar names, such as lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) or lemon peel essential oil, does not apply to this fruit extract. BBK's lemon extract is halal certified.

Using this research for BPOM registration

  1. Add the three journals above to the literature review or the safety and benefit supporting data in your product dossier.
  2. Attach BBK's specification and per-batch CoA as raw material quality data. The specification always ships with the order; CoA is available on request.
  3. Match your serving size to the doses used in the studies, then confirm final claims with a regulatory consultant or BPOM.

The studies above were not done with BBK products. BBK extracts are made with the Super Hydro™ method, but study results do not automatically apply to your finished product.
