Hyphaene thebaica (doum)-derived extract alleviates hyperglycemia in diabetic rats: a comprehensive in silico, in vitro and in vivo study.
Shady, Hassan, Elrehany, et al. Food & function, 2021.
Study design: In silico, in vitro, and in vivo study in male streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats; organic and aqueous extracts of Hyphaene thebaica fruit for 7 weeks.
- The aqueous extract of zuriat fruit lowered high blood sugar in diabetic rats.
- Insulin gene expression increased, while the inflammatory markers TNF-α and TGF-β decreased.
- The main compounds identified were flavonoids.
- In vitro, myricetin, luteolin, and apigenin triggered insulin secretion from human pancreatic cells (20.9, 13.74, and 11.33 ng/mL).
What it means for your product: Points to an early research direction in sugar metabolism. Results in rats cannot be used as claims for humans.
