Super Hydro™

Produced with the Super Hydro™ method

Simplisia vs Super Hydro™: extraction separates active compounds from fibre and starch

Super Hydro™ is an extraction method developed by BBK's extract manufacturing team. It draws out the active compounds of natural materials more effectively at a lower concentration. Based on our internal testing, a Super Hydro™ extract at a 2:1 ratio delivers performance comparable to a 5:1 extract from non-standardised producers.

Patent status: The Super Hydro™ method is currently patent pending. Even so, every BBK extract has been produced with this method from the start, so each batch you receive meets a quality standard above the market average.

Research & product opportunities

Papaya Leaf Extract (Carica papaya): 3 Studies and Product Opportunities

Papaya leaf is popular as a jamu ingredient, mainly because of research on platelets in dengue fever. The evidence is in humans, but its quality is still low and there are safety notes you should know. The three studies below help you build honest claims.

Study 1 · Meta-analysis Very strong evidence

Carica papaya extract in dengue: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Rajapakse, de Silva, Weeratunga, et al. BMC complementary and alternative medicine, 2019.

Study design: Systematic review and meta-analysis of 9 controlled studies (India 6, Pakistan 1, Indonesia 1, Malaysia 1) on Carica papaya extract in dengue patients.

Key findings
  • Seven studies reported a rise in platelet count in the groups receiving the extract, and one study found no significant difference.
  • Hospital stay was shorter: mean difference -1.98 days (3 studies, 580 participants, low-quality evidence).
  • No serious adverse effects were reported.
  • The authors concluded that the evidence is not yet sufficient to assess the role of papaya extract in dengue.

What it means for your product: This research explains why papaya leaf is in market demand. However, this is a patient context, not a basis for product claims; dengue remains a matter for medical professionals.

Study 2 · Systematic review Supporting evidence

Carica papaya L. Leaf: A Systematic Scoping Review on Biological Safety and Herb-Drug Interactions.

Lim, Chan, Japri, et al. Evidence-based complementary and alternative medicine : eCAM, 2021.

Study design: Systematic scoping review of 41 articles (23 clinical, 5 ongoing trials, 13 preclinical) on the safety and drug interactions of papaya leaf.

Key findings
  • Consumption of papaya leaf (juice and standardized aqueous extract) is generally tolerated by adults in the short term (less than five days).
  • The most frequently reported side effects were mild gastrointestinal complaints.
  • Animal studies raise concerns about liver and reproductive toxicity with long-term use.
  • Potential interactions with metformin, glimepiride, digoxin, ciprofloxacin, and artemisinin were reported.

What it means for your product: A must-have reference for the safety section of a dossier. Include warnings for pregnant women, people with liver disorders, and regular medication users.

Study 3 · Randomized controlled trial (RCT) Strong evidence

Effect of a Toothpaste/Mouthwash Containing Carica papaya Leaf Extract on Interdental Gingival Bleeding: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Saliasi, Llodra, Bravo, et al. International journal of environmental research and public health, 2018.

Study design: Single-blind randomized clinical trial in 100 healthy adults aged 18 to 26 years for 4 weeks, comparing papaya leaf extract toothpaste and mouthwash with comparator products.

Key findings
  • Interdental gum bleeding sites decreased in all groups (relative change -54 to -75 percent).
  • Papaya leaf extract toothpaste did not differ significantly from SLS-free toothpaste with or without an essential oil mouthwash.
  • The combination of papaya leaf toothpaste and mouthwash resulted in fewer bleeding sites than toothpaste alone (21 vs 32 percent).

What it means for your product: Opens opportunities beyond jamu: natural oral care products, with claims of being equivalent to comparators, not superior.

Claims you can make

Language guide for B2B and educational materials. Claims on finished product labels and ads must be the ones approved by BPOM at registration.

OK to say

  • Contains papaya leaf extract (Carica papaya).
  • Papaya leaf has been studied in a number of clinical trials, including a meta-analysis of 9 studies (cite the source).
  • Papaya leaf is a traditional Indonesian jamu ingredient.

Avoid

  • Raises platelets, treats dengue fever, or replaces medical care.
  • Safe for long-term use, for pregnant women, or with diabetes medication.
  • Cures gum inflammation or oral diseases.

The safety review covers consumption of papaya leaf juice and aqueous extract, while the dengue meta-analysis does not specify the preparation; the oral care study used extract in toothpaste. The papain marker in the BBK extract differs from the parameters of these studies, so request a CoA if needed. Avoid for pregnant women and people with liver disorders, and watch for drug interactions. The halal status of this extract is not yet certified.

Using this research for BPOM registration

  1. Add the three journals above to the literature review or the safety and benefit supporting data in your product dossier.
  2. Attach BBK's specification and per-batch CoA as raw material quality data. The specification always ships with the order; CoA is available on request.
  3. Match your serving size to the doses used in the studies, then confirm final claims with a regulatory consultant or BPOM.

The studies above were not done with BBK products. BBK extracts are made with the Super Hydro™ method, but study results do not automatically apply to your finished product.
