Super Hydro™

Produced with the Super Hydro™ method

Simplisia vs Super Hydro™: extraction separates active compounds from fibre and starch

Super Hydro™ is an extraction method developed by BBK's extract manufacturing team. It draws out the active compounds of natural materials more effectively at a lower concentration. Based on our internal testing, a Super Hydro™ extract at a 2:1 ratio delivers performance comparable to a 5:1 extract from non-standardised producers.

Patent status: The Super Hydro™ method is currently patent pending. Even so, every BBK extract has been produced with this method from the start, so each batch you receive meets a quality standard above the market average.

Research & product opportunities

Kale Extract (Brassica oleracea var. sabellica): 3 Clinical Studies and Product Opportunities

Kale is popular as a green superfood. Its human clinical trials are still small, but they are interesting because they used processed forms such as freeze-dried powder and carotenoid extract. The three studies below are relevant for green drink, supplement, and beauty-from-within brands.

Study 1 · Randomized controlled trial (RCT) Strong evidence

Beneficial Effects of a Freeze-Dried Kale Bar on Type 2 Diabetes Patients: A Randomized, Double-Blinded, Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial.

Jeppesen, Dorner, Yue, et al. Nutrients, 2024.

Study design: 12-week blinded, placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial in thirty people with type 2 diabetes; three bars per day, each containing 26.25 g of freeze-dried kale (equivalent to about 341 g of fresh kale per day).

Key findings
  • HbA1c, insulin resistance, body weight, and calorie intake fell significantly compared with control.
  • Fasting blood glucose and LDL cholesterol showed a positive trend.
  • Total body fat mass and the OGTT glucose curve did not differ significantly.
  • The authors recommend follow-up studies with more participants.

What it means for your product: Evidence that kale powder can be formulated into food products such as bars. The dose was very high, so the extract dose in your product is likely much smaller.

Study 2 · Clinical study Strong evidence

Influences of Orally Taken Carotenoid-Rich Curly Kale Extract on Collagen I/Elastin Index of the Skin.

Meinke, Nowbary, Schanzer, et al. Nutrients, 2017.

Study design: Intervention study in 29 healthy women aged 40 to 56; a carotenoid-rich curly kale extract containing a total of 1,650 µg of carotenoids (three 550 µg capsules) once a day, measured at months 5 and 10.

Key findings
  • Skin carotenoid levels increased significantly after 5 and 10 months.
  • The collagen I/elastin aging index in the dermis also increased significantly.
  • Measurements were taken non-invasively with a reflectance scanner and two-photon tomography.

What it means for your product: Opens opportunities for beauty-from-within products. This study had no placebo group, so its results need to be interpreted with caution.

Study 3 · Randomized controlled trial (RCT) Strong evidence

Age-related macular degeneration: Effects of a short-term intervention with an oleaginous kale extract--a pilot study.

Arnold, Jentsch, Dawczynski, et al. Nutrition (Burbank, Los Angeles County, Calif.), 2013.

Study design: Double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial (pilot study) in twenty patients with non-exudative macular degeneration; a 50 mL drink containing an oil-based kale extract providing 10 mg lutein and 3 mg zeaxanthin per day for 4 weeks.

Key findings
  • Plasma xanthophyll levels and macular pigment density increased significantly after 4 weeks.
  • The values fell again during a 4-week period without intervention.
  • At the end of the study, values were still higher than at baseline, but the improvement was not fully sustained.

What it means for your product: Shows kale as a source of lutein that the body can absorb. Relevant for lutein-based drinks or supplements, noting that what was tested was an oil-based extract.

Claims you can make

Language guide for B2B and educational materials. Claims on finished product labels and ads must be the ones approved by BPOM at registration.

OK to say

  • Contains kale extract (Brassica oleracea var. sabellica) with vitamin K as a marker.
  • Kale contains carotenoids such as lutein and zeaxanthin and has been studied in clinical trials (cite the source).
  • Kale is a green vegetable in the cabbage family popular as a superfood.

Avoid

  • Treats diabetes or macular degeneration.
  • Prevents skin aging or increases collagen, unless the claim is approved by BPOM for your product.
  • Safe for all medication users. Its vitamin K content can affect how blood thinners such as warfarin work.

The three studies used different forms (high-dose freeze-dried powder, a carotenoid extract in capsules, and an oil-based extract), and the first study used kale var. acephala. Carotenoid and vitamin K content in the powdered extract should be documented via a CoA. Users of blood thinners should consult a doctor.

Using this research for BPOM registration

  1. Add the three journals above to the literature review or the safety and benefit supporting data in your product dossier.
  2. Attach BBK's specification and per-batch CoA as raw material quality data. The specification always ships with the order; CoA is available on request.
  3. Match your serving size to the doses used in the studies, then confirm final claims with a regulatory consultant or BPOM.

The studies above were not done with BBK products. BBK extracts are made with the Super Hydro™ method, but study results do not automatically apply to your finished product.
