Child acceptability of a novel provitamin A carotenoid, iron and zinc-rich complementary food blend prepared from pumpkin and common bean in Uganda: a randomised control trial.
Buzigi, Pillay, Siwela BMC pediatrics, 2020.
Study design: Randomized crossover acceptance trial in children aged 6 to 24 months in Uganda (n = 35 per sequence). A 100 g complementary food of pumpkin alone, or a pumpkin and red bean mix.
- Mean intake was 53.9 g for the pumpkin-bean mix and 54.4 g for pumpkin alone, with no significant difference; both met the acceptance threshold.
- Vitamin A intake was higher with pumpkin alone: 152.5 vs 100.9 μgRAE.
- The bean mix gave higher iron (1.1 vs 0.3 mg) and zinc (0.58 vs 0.13 mg) intake.
- Eating time was almost the same, about 20.6 and 20.3 minutes.
What it means for your product: Shows that pumpkin is well accepted as a food ingredient and contributes vitamin A. Relevant to fortification and family food products, not to health claims.
