Super Hydro™

Produced with the Super Hydro™ method

Simplisia vs Super Hydro™: extraction separates active compounds from fibre and starch

Super Hydro™ is an extraction method developed by BBK's extract manufacturing team. It draws out the active compounds of natural materials more effectively at a lower concentration. Based on our internal testing, a Super Hydro™ extract at a 2:1 ratio delivers performance comparable to a 5:1 extract from non-standardised producers.

Patent status: The Super Hydro™ method is currently patent pending. Even so, every BBK extract has been produced with this method from the start, so each batch you receive meets a quality standard above the market average.

Research & product opportunities

Paprika Extract (Capsicum annuum): 3 Studies and Product Opportunities

Red paprika is known mainly as a source of natural red color from carotenoids, with capsanthin as its main marker. Human research is still limited to safety and carotenoid absorption. The health benefits of capsanthin discussed in scientific reviews are not yet supported by clinical trials in this pool.

Study 1 · Randomized controlled trial (RCT) Strong evidence

Safety Evaluation and Plasma Carotenoid Accumulation in Healthy Adult Subjects after 12 Weeks of Paprika Oleoresin Supplementation.

Umigai, Murakami, Shimizu, et al. Journal of oleo science, 2018.

Study design: Double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study in 33 healthy adults randomized to paprika oleoresin capsules of 0, 20, or 100 mg per day for 12 weeks.

Key findings
  • Plasma beta-cryptoxanthin and zeaxanthin increased with dose over 12 weeks.
  • Beta-cryptoxanthin accumulated the most of all paprika carotenoids.
  • Capsanthin, in contrast, was not detected in plasma before or during the 12 weeks.
  • There were no side effects related to paprika oleoresin at 20 and 100 mg/day on blood and urine tests.

What it means for your product: Useful early safety data for a dossier. However, capsanthin was not measurable in blood, so do not link systemic benefits directly to capsanthin.

Study 2 · Scientific review Supporting evidence

Capsanthin, a Plant-Derived Xanthophyll: a Review of Pharmacology and Delivery Strategies.

Kennedy, Abraham, Kulkarni, et al. AAPS PharmSciTech, 2021.

Study design: Literature review on the pharmacology of capsanthin and formulation strategies to improve its solubility and stability.

Key findings
  • Capsanthin is a red-orange xanthophyll with a chain of 11 conjugated double bonds that gives strong antioxidant power.
  • Reported activities include antioxidant, skin photoprotective, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, and anti-obesity effects; the abstract does not mention clinical trials for these activities.
  • Its water solubility is very low, so oral bioavailability is low and variable.
  • Capsanthin is easily damaged by heat, light, oxygen, and moisture.

What it means for your product: Important for R&D teams: choose packaging that blocks light and oxygen, and consider lipid-based carrier systems or encapsulation.

Study 3 · Scientific review Supporting evidence

Red pepper (Capsicum annuum) carotenoids as a source of natural food colors: analysis and stability-a review.

Arimboor, Natarajan, Menon, et al. Journal of food science and technology, 2015.

Study design: Review of red paprika carotenoids as a source of natural food color, analysis methods, and stability.

Key findings
  • Red paprika is described as a potential source of natural food color from carotenoids.
  • Carotenoid stability is affected by post-harvest processing and storage.
  • The authors stress the need for standard methods for analyzing and reporting carotenoid composition.

What it means for your product: Supports the biggest opportunity for paprika extract, a natural red colorant. Ask for color parameters or carotenoid content on the CoA for batch-to-batch consistency.

Claims you can make

Language guide for B2B and educational materials. Claims on finished product labels and ads must be the ones approved by BPOM at registration.

OK to say

  • Contains paprika extract (Capsicum annuum) with capsanthin, a natural red pigment, as a marker.
  • Red paprika is a natural source of carotenoids such as capsanthin, beta-carotene, and zeaxanthin.
  • Paprika oleoresin has been tested for safety over 12 weeks in healthy adults (cite the source).

Avoid

  • Prevents cancer, obesity, or heart disease (evidence is still preclinical).
  • Capsanthin is absorbed and works inside the body. The human study did not detect it in plasma.
  • Calling the product halal. The halal status of BBK paprika extract is not yet certified.

The clinical study used paprika oleoresin (a solvent extract) in capsules, not extract powder. Capsanthin is sensitive to heat, light, and oxygen, so test color stability in your finished product. The halal status of BBK paprika extract is not yet certified.

Using this research for BPOM registration

  1. Add the three journals above to the literature review or the safety and benefit supporting data in your product dossier.
  2. Attach BBK's specification and per-batch CoA as raw material quality data. The specification always ships with the order; CoA is available on request.
  3. Match your serving size to the doses used in the studies, then confirm final claims with a regulatory consultant or BPOM.

The studies above were not done with BBK products. BBK extracts are made with the Super Hydro™ method, but study results do not automatically apply to your finished product.
