Super Hydro™

Produced with the Super Hydro™ method

Simplisia vs Super Hydro™: extraction separates active compounds from fibre and starch

Super Hydro™ is an extraction method developed by BBK's extract manufacturing team. It draws out the active compounds of natural materials more effectively at a lower concentration. Based on our internal testing, a Super Hydro™ extract at a 2:1 ratio delivers performance comparable to a 5:1 extract from non-standardised producers.

Patent status: The Super Hydro™ method is currently patent pending. Even so, every BBK extract has been produced with this method from the start, so each batch you receive meets a quality standard above the market average.

Research & product opportunities

Bitter Melon Extract (Momordica charantia): 3 Studies and Product Opportunities

Bitter melon (pare) is popular as a jamu ingredient for blood sugar. Its clinical evidence turns out to be inconsistent: one clinical trial saw a fall in fasting blood glucose, but the latest meta-analysis found no significant effect. The marker charantin is also questioned as the main active compound.

Study 1 · Randomized controlled trial (RCT) Strong evidence

Hypoglycemic efficacy and safety of Momordica charantia (bitter melon) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Kim, Jung, Jung, et al. Complementary therapies in medicine, 2020.

Study design: Placebo-controlled randomized trial in people with type 2 diabetes using bitter melon extract as add-on therapy, ninety participants analyzed, for 12 weeks.

Key findings
  • Fasting blood glucose in the bitter melon extract group fell significantly (p = 0.014).
  • HbA1c levels did not change, in either the bitter melon or placebo group.
  • There were no serious side effects during the study period.

What it means for your product: The only reasonably clear positive signal, but the unchanged HbA1c shows the effect is limited. Use it as educational material, not a claim.

Study 2 · Meta-analysis Very strong evidence

The metabolic effect of Momordica charantia cannot be determined based on the available clinical evidence: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials.

Laczkó-Zöld, Csupor-Löffler, Kolcsár, et al. Frontiers in nutrition, 2023.

Study design: Systematic review and meta-analysis of 9 randomized clinical trials with a total of 414 patients, with follow-up of 4 to 16 weeks.

Key findings
  • There was no significant effect compared with placebo on fasting blood glucose (MD -0.03) or HbA1c (MD -0.12).
  • There was no significant effect on cholesterol, body weight, BMI, or blood pressure.
  • Liver function markers (ALT, AST) and creatinine did not change, which the authors say supports its safety.
  • Statistical power was low and the studies were too short to assess long-term effects.

What it means for your product: Essential reading so brands do not make exaggerated claims. Bitter melon is safest marketed through tradition and as a nutritious bitter vegetable.

Study 3 · Scientific review Supporting evidence

Momordica charantia L.-Diabetes-Related Bioactivities, Quality Control, and Safety Considerations.

Çiçek Frontiers in pharmacology, 2022.

Study design: Brief review of the active compounds of bitter melon, diabetes-related activity, adverse effects, and quality control methods for bitter melon preparations.

Key findings
  • Traditionally, bitter melon is used as a stomachic, laxative, anthelmintic, and above all for diabetes.
  • Charantin, a mixture of two sterol glucosides, is present at low levels in the fruit, so it cannot explain the observed effects.
  • Recent research focuses more on cucurbitane-type triterpenoids as the compounds thought to play a role.
  • The authors evaluated the suitability of quality control methods for standardizing commercial preparations.

What it means for your product: Charantin can be listed as an identity marker, but should not be used as evidence of efficacy. Discuss additional quality parameters if you need standardization.

Claims you can make

Language guide for B2B and educational materials. Claims on finished product labels and ads must be the ones approved by BPOM at registration.

OK to say

  • Contains bitter melon extract (Momordica charantia) with charantin as a marker.
  • Bitter melon has been used for generations in jamu and Asian cooking.
  • Bitter melon has been studied in a number of clinical trials related to metabolism, with results that are not yet consistent (cite the source).

Avoid

  • Lowers blood sugar, treats diabetes, or replaces diabetes medication.
  • Lowers cholesterol or body weight.
  • Safe for pregnant women or safe to combine with diabetes medication, without advice to consult a health professional.

The material form in the clinical trials may differ from this extract powder, and the meta-analysis found no significant metabolic effect. Bitter melon is generally avoided in pregnancy, and people taking blood sugar lowering medication need to be careful about the risk of blood sugar dropping too low. The halal status of BBK bitter melon extract is not yet certified.

Using this research for BPOM registration

  1. Add the three journals above to the literature review or the safety and benefit supporting data in your product dossier.
  2. Attach BBK's specification and per-batch CoA as raw material quality data. The specification always ships with the order; CoA is available on request.
  3. Match your serving size to the doses used in the studies, then confirm final claims with a regulatory consultant or BPOM.

The studies above were not done with BBK products. BBK extracts are made with the Super Hydro™ method, but study results do not automatically apply to your finished product.
