Efficacy and Safety of Centella Asiatica (L.) Urb. on Wrinkles: A Systematic Review of Published Data and Network Meta-Analysis.
Kongkaew, Meesomperm, Scholfield, et al. Journal of cosmetic science, 2020.
Study design: Systematic review and network meta-analysis of 5 double-blind randomized clinical trials with a total of 172 Asian women, using gels, creams, or lipsticks containing Centella asiatica or asiaticoside.
- Two studies compared gotu kola gel or cream around the eyes for 12 weeks with placebo; in the network meta-analysis, gotu kola appeared more effective than Pueraria mirifica but possibly less effective than tretinoin.
- Lipstick containing asiaticoside for 8 weeks reduced lip wrinkles.
- Skin hydration clearly increased with Centella asiatica; one study recorded 10 side effects for gotu kola and 35 for tretinoin.
- Weak standardization of gotu kola limits how widely the results can be applied.
What it means for your product: A strong basis for anti-aging and moisturizing skincare. Asiaticoside standardization on the CoA is an important selling point.
