Effect of tamarind (Tamarindus indica L.) on the cardiometabolic health of patients living with HIV and elevated triglyceride levels: a dose-response double-blind, randomized exploratory trial.
Kiyimba, Kigozi, Bamuwamye, et al. Food & function, 2025.
Study design: 4-week exploratory double-blind randomized clinical trial in 50 people with HIV and triglycerides of at least 150 mg/dL. 600 mL of tamarind juice per day with 10% or 30% pulp (1,556 mg or 1,631 mg of polyphenols).
- Juice with 30% pulp lowered triglycerides by -39.8 mg/dL, equal to 17.3% of baseline levels.
- The 10% juice showed no significant effect on triglycerides.
- Neither dose had a significant effect on total cholesterol, LDL, or HDL.
- The 10% juice lowered systolic blood pressure by -7.4 mmHg; the authors said this study is not strong enough for firm conclusions.
