Effect of stevia on blood glucose and HbA1C: A meta-analysis.
Zare, Zeinalabedini, Ebrahimpour-Koujan, et al. Diabetes & metabolic syndrome, 2024.
Study design: Systematic review and meta-analysis of 26 studies with 1,439 participants on the effect of stevia intake on glycemic indices.
- Stevia intake was associated with lower blood glucose (WMD -3.84), with low certainty.
- The effect was more visible in participants with higher BMI, diabetes, and hypertension.
- Dose-response analysis showed lower blood glucose at stevia intakes of 3,342 mg per day or more.
- Stevia had no significant effect on insulin levels or HbA1c.
What it means for your product: The strongest evidence available, but the effect is small and certainty is low. For products, position it as a sugar substitute, not a blood sugar reducer.
